What is The Dolly Shop?

The Dolly Shop is my side project. I paint pop culture portraits and draw anthropomorphic animals and sell my work online, at local markets, and in stores Canada-wide. I also sell shirts that are screen-printed locally and magnets that are cut and packaged by hand.

Why is it called the Dolly Shop?

The Dolly Shop is named for my first solo show in 2013, which was titled "Dolly." The idea behind Dolly was the result of my desire to represent midcentury children's toys and books somewhere within the blurred space that sits between cute and creepy and which varies widely from person to person. I was inspired at the time by the imagery produced by Eloise Wilkins in the little golden books that she illustrated, as well as drawn to dolls made around the 1950's, the time period my parents grew up in. I was interested in examining their childhood through these toys and books and in exploring the effect it had on shaping their worldview. For the show, I filled the gallery with lifelike portraits of Ideal brand dolls dressed as children. While I've since reduced the inclusion of dolls in my work to focus more on animals, I will still include the dolls from time to time.
